On the concept of ownership and “Old Way”
Kelly and I have talked a lot recently about the failure of the current notion of ownership in regards to water rights or anything else. The history of the Lajitas Texas is part of his personal experience. This experience includes first hand knowledge of social issues having deep social roots.
The Resort community in Lajitas has set of by-laws with an enlightened governance. I will leave it to the reader to make a personal investigation about this community.
The actions that the Foundation is considering would include the acquisition of property at Lajitas, the participation in funding local agricultural / nutraceutical industry, and the hosting of several small science conferences.
The key to our contribution is to develop a neutral path between land ownership by the ultra-wealthy and the cultural roots of the Big Bend region. This neutral path has been already partially defined by Kelly Pruitt. The artist/writer has an International following and participated in a social event there at the community several years ago. The community owns several of his original oil paintings.
Our contribution would be supported by the Foundation’s ability to bring scientific conferences to Lajitas and make cultural contributions to the region.
The primary objective of our participation in the resort at Lajitas is to develop planning supporting a resilient rural economy based ranching co-ops. Notes on this objective are within a log of discussions on this at:

These notes are not specific to the Big Bend region, and where developed as part of some national planning activities with a group of faculty members at Georgetown and George Washington Universities.
The scope of the planning was to be supported by a Democratic President if he were to be elected. Since the 2004 elections the group has made a number of proposals to Department of Homeland Security and others, but those proposals did not go anywhere.
The objective, if undertaken at Lajitas, will be financed, in part, by the world-wide presentation/marketing of the stories and unique viewpoint of “Old Way” by artist writer A. Kelly Pruitt. This presentation is being developed at www.virtualTaos.org and www.virtualTaos.net . The presentation will be extended from Lajitas due to high quality Internet service.
As current envisioned, this world-wide presentation will be made by maintaining properties at Lajitas and in Taos New Mexico and through the use of advance e-commerce system.
Scientific conferences will be scheduled in Taos and at Lajitas. These conferences will address the emerging science of complexity, the technology supporting ontological modeling of complex natural processes, and micro-farm revitalization of rural economies.
