On Founding the Taos Institute

Discussion

I just talked again with L H  (who owns a major part of the lands just south of the Plaza) about the notion of a National Park skirting the south side of the Taos Historic district and D S regarding his architectural input based on his work on anticipatory design of a historically sensitive entrance to the south side of the district.

Pictures of the properties involved will be here

in about an hour...

Let me take this opportunity to rehearse the issues and concepts.

First a general statement about the deep cultural and economic problems in the Taos art market.

over the roads in the Historic part of Taos.  (This issue has historical grounding.)

in which is discussed

a national park to be developed from available lands acquired

The Smith grocery store and adjacent lands  (12 acres)

 Indian Hills Inn (3 acres)

the Pueblo Allegro mall building (2 acres)

the Hines storage properties (but NOT the Hines estate)  (5 acres)

the existing property on which a McDonalds was built (were the natural    springs was "plugged" (2 acres)

Either 10 acres and/or 27 acres of the Couse Foundation's meadow (which has a strong Pueblo ownership claim.

and that part of Hy 68 to splits the historic district and cause so much damage to the Taos art markets

Clearly the following are necessary:

·        Strong support from the Taos Pueblo

·        US Presidential Interest and funding for land (20M) and for new roads (20M)

·        A truck by-pass that would take the gravel traffic off of the road through the Historic District

Given these three conditions, it is possible to continue the "Taos 2050" discussion.

My notes on virtual Taos is preserved in a type of web log..

The notes on the technology that eventually may be available to virtual markets is at

Clearly, the renewal of the historic areas of Taos can be more easily represented in a virtual reality than can the physical appearance of the building and roads.  And the development of the emarket for Taos should in some way to benefit to the renewal of the historic areas of Taos .
