I am listening very carefully to your thoughts. We are reflecting on causation in general, but also specifically on why individuals demonstrate a capacity to engage in little that is greater than a narrow self-interest. My own work on learned learning ability explains, to me, the non-rationality of this behavior:

In more general terms learned behavior, that is aversive to doing what might be otherwise perceived as for the common good, often block cultural progress. What is often called ego is one cause of such blockage. But our problems are truly more complex that this.
Part of the discourse on this topic is reflected in a recent discussion on the development of memetics.
Our claim to have an alternating current type information production technology that enables a measurement of social discourse is discussed in a paper I wrote for Admiral Poindexture when he was running the DARPA “Total Information Awareness” program in 2002. In this paper we address a new capability to separate the thematic structure of social discourse from the individual identification so that the resulting “glass bead game” is seen as a poll type measurement of the thought being expressed within communities.
Of course the “real people” (as opposed to the rest of us) in the intelligence community have a number of deep cognitive blocks. They cannot conceive that there is technology that they do not know about which fundamentally improves the overall situation with respect to symmetric threats generated from wells of deep despair. Don Mitchell’s work on a knowledge operating system is one example of such technology. Work on conceptual indexing is another related technology. [*] [*]
The National Project has great economic, social and spiritual potential. But there are true barriers that block the innovations that I, and other knowledge scientists, have ready to market. The BCNGroup Charter is designed to aggregation ownership over intellectual property that does not as yet exists, but which extends the work that I have represented on the several web sites www.ontologystream.com and others. This aggregated property is to serve as a protection against the use of intellectual property to control economic sectors using a narrow and self-centered form of capitalism – called “imperial capitalism” by William Greider in hid new book “ The Soul of Capitalism, Opening Paths to a Moral Economy” (2003).
We see the Rural America Safe Net as a low cost actual response to the threats that Rural America faces if we have any large-scale natural disaster or a bioterrorism attack. The federal government has various programs that ACT as if these programs address the threats to Rural America. But like claimed true knowledge of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, the analysis at the Federal level has problems taking into account the real situation.
AND then something is also missing. What is missing in the current expenditures made by HHS, DHS and State governments is the six for one opportunity to make substantial progress on
1) renewing agrarian spirit in rural America [*]
2) providing a rural Internet-type resource for distance learning (K-12 and adult)
3) reducing/eliminating advertising, porn, spam and viruses in an Internet-type resource owned by local governments
4) increasing the mental health and primary health care information services in rural America
5) providing a secure, resilient, two way cyber connectivity between local rural governance and state governance
6) providing a citizen centric resource aiding in participatory governance
What we are looking for is a way to make a breakout from what has been a 15-year private discussion, involving several hundred scientists, into a known reality.
One of the means to do this MIGHT be a direct confrontation with the "system" as discussion in:
