Simple Ontological Model in Medical Informatics-

Translation of my experience into an Ontology and Orb model.

By Dr Jayanth Paraki,

Abstract:

Substance S has informally proved itself to mend the broken ends of a fractured bone.   But there is little recognition of the known capabilities of this substance by corporations that control intellectual property.

In regards to this substance, we cite from two decades of experience plus the research documentation, which, was published at the 10th Annual Research Seminar of Deming Institute and Fordham University, 2004.

Context:

Various substances are routinely used to prepare medicines and drugs to treat diseases.  Substances, which have healing properties, have been documented in scientific and lay literature ever since mankind existed. However, in corporate medicine, there is minimal awareness of the system of Homeopathy and the manner in which that system works.  The issue of intellectual property is key and interferes with what would otherwise be the natural evolution of medical science.  Our challenge is to allow new types of corporations to come into existence which economic viable is directly related to the degree in which natural substances are distributed within a collective intelligence based on medical informatics.  Government regulatory mechanisms will support these new types of corporations if the decision making processes, the collective intelligence, is sufficiently peer reviewed by practicing physicians.

Substances lie the S substance have properties that have been proved on healthy human volunteers by a process called as ‘Proving’.

Hahnemann did this long ago and evolved a system and method of treatment, which he called Homeopathy.

It is noteworthy to know that Hahnemann was an intuitive scientist whose powers of observation were remarkably accurate. His sense of hypothesizing that a substance has healing properties and curing many patients is all the more brilliant considering that he did not have the support of modern laboratories, equipment or teamwork.

Relational aspects of Substances and Healing-

Ontological models provide an opportunity for laboratory experimentation and evidence based research, based on a objectification of the experience of a world wide community of government certified physicians.

1.        One of the things that Protege ontology editor allow is to develop a simple ontological model where information about substances and their healing properties are maintained.  The Protégé editor has a long history with the National Library of Medicine in the United States.  There are many Protégé defined medical ontologies.  A community of physicians believe that substance S has healing properties and by virtue of the property that it catalyses new bone synthesis. What is the exact property of Substance S that catalyses new bone synthesis? We have an opportunity to verify and validate in a scientific laboratory.

2.        Evidence about substance S can be encoded into a community accessable knowledge base.  For examples, substance S is a mineral substance and we know that human beings require minerals for sustenance and longevity. By gathering together evidence of this type, we have an opportunity to define a relationship between minerals, longevity, new bone synthesis and participate in the ongoing debate on the concept of micro-nutrient deficiency as a leading cause of chronic degenerative disorders.

3.        Application of medical knowledge is then freed.  Minimum levels of micronutrients for health and well-being can then be objectively defined to meet safety regulations and public expectations. Given the use of the Protégé editor, one can create a RDF file on New Recommendations for Micro-nutrient Consumption.

Advanced Science and Medicine

1.        The Orb ontology specification can be used in highly advanced biomedical research.  We will take the example of Autism and draw a relationship between an autistic child and some unknown substance that needs to be discovered.  Let us see how the Orb form will look like. . We will assume that these children lack in some concentration the following elements- Au, Pa, and Pl.  These elements are present in this unknown substance.  If the substance can be located and can be harvested then we may treat autistic children.

2.        In the theory underlying Homeopathy, the use of substances has both a precision is quantity and a temporal aspect.  Autistic children will become improve if the mineral elements are replaced in exact concentration as they lack. For this measurement is a must.

In the differential ontology framework (DOF) may assume an Orb encoding of knowledge having the general form:

< e, J, m >

where e and m are “ models of the boy and the boy with these substances properly administered” in a space-time continuum and J is an autistic boy waiting for medical substance to reach him.  J is now a link and has a relationship between the two locations.

Humans are attempting to learn about autism and it may be a good idea to learn about ontological modeling simultaneously as a means to understand complex system in the real world.

Our efforts at developing the knowledge sciences will not be overshadowed by obscure technical demands related to the RDF and OWL standards.

These technical demands may in fact be incorrect if evaluated from a complex systems point of view.  This may well then serve as a key example to do with establishing standard meaning for all concepts.
