We need each person to tell ten people about the BCNGroup and for some people to make gifts and contributions to this Not For Profit Corporation (registered in the Commonwealth of Virginia 1997).

How ORBs are created

An example of part of the emerging Knowledge Technologies map is shown in Figure 1.

with semantic affordance indicated

Let us look at how this map came into being and then we will look at a few immediate uses of these ORB neighborhoods.   The tutorial on using ORBs is important to read.

How the ORBs are created

The ORBs are created using an experimental system developed by Nathan Einwechter and Paul Prueitt immediately after completing a contract for Applied Technical Systems.  The design and notational system for extension of the design is given fully, and made public domain, in the Notational System for the Ontology Reference Base (ORB).  The ORBs also use the SLIP technology developed by Don E. Mitchell and Paul Prueitt (2001) to link together the experimental system’s output and to provide local visualization to the resulting n-dimensional graph.

The output of the experimental system is a set of syntagmatic units having the form

{ < a, r, b > }

where a and b are “locations” and r is a relational operator.  In the case of the current experimental system the relational operator is fixed and is the relationship:

the words a and b co-occur in the same sentence

The Upper Taxonomy work is necessary to create a set of “non-stop words”, or to say this more clearly, a set of deemed significant words.  The deeming process follows the spirit of the Topic Maps 1.0 standard in establishing the need for a human reification process.

A few immediate uses of ORB neighborhoods

In the previous communication it is suggested how ORB will be used to drive the delivery of  right-size, just-in-time, educational curriculum as part of the National Project.
