Hi Paul, Ken,

I found the attached TopQuadrant review (especially the tabled reviews) very helpful in understanding the "semantics" market.

It looks like there are two completely different issues that are confused together:

(1) Understanding semantics / ontology / knowledge acquisition  (Readware quest)

(2) Creating interoperability between existing disparate information structures or legacy databases, some of which claim to have AI / ontology / semantics.

The first problem (1) needs to be solved before semantic interoperability is discussed.  Otherwise, we would be jumping the gun.

The solution of the second problem (2) has nothing to do with semantics.  It's purely technical.

I can see a logic to the following quest, ten years from now:

(2b) Creating unified techniques, structures and standards based on accomplishments in understanding semantics / ontology / knowledge acquisition.

What do you think?  What would Mills Davis think?
