Paul,

The Research Assistant, an early product of the Readware technology, measured (stemmed) texts in eight different languages and relied on the letter semantics of multilingual stems.  The stemming is not the usual stemming, produced for example by the Porter stemmer, but is in each case, for each language, hand developed using a set of heuristics that I seemed comfortable with.  A single language can be done in a matter of months by uses dictionary and thesaurus resources.  In each case, a set of rules developed, with a set of exceptions, which generated in most cases the stemming that is required.

However, since about 1991, Readware has relied on assignment of up to three Arabic stems to a stemmed word of English, German or French.   We took the step that you now recognize as regarding the Q substructure framework has being an artifact having a independence from the language in which is was discovered.  The set of around 3,800 Arabic stems are simply places, functional locations, in an generative ontology we conjecture to exist as part of the cross scale assemble between Q and the systems ontology where human concepts reside.

The language independence of the substructural ontology Q allows us to talk more generally about a Q-stem.

Part I: substructural Q

The assignment is based on the ontology of individual systems, specifically, on how the control factor determines the structure of Q-stems and creates a precise definition.

The Readware ConceptBase is based on precise definitions of around 3800 Q-stems.  The second layer of the structured Q ontology defines and dictates these definitions and they account for much of the success of the Readware technology at TREC.

The Readware folder

The preservation ontology classifies system definitions (analyzed Q-stems) and captures their relationships as Readware topics (systems), issues (common preservation frames), probes (query helpers) and themes (preservation frames).  This part is the second major factor that accounts for the success of Readware.

We are now preparing Orbs for 25 Aesop fables to demonstrate all three layers of the structured Q ontology as I continue working on expressing Part II and Part III.
