Communication from Paul Prueitt

I thank Judith for her posting... which I reposted at:

I could go into Pribram's discussion of the Gabor information theory, but I am always felt that the way that it was developed in Pribram's literature, the notion of a wavelet and quantum foundation to information, was only partially interesting.  The part that was not interesting to me was the continuation of notions of optimality that I felt was inherited in Pribram's theory from Shannon.

I agree completely with how Robert Rosen expresses the opinion that Shannon information was NOT about how living systems signal.  I personally, when I was maturing as a scientist, felt unhappy with the concepts that were treated as if truth, because "Shannon" was supposed to have said this or that.

Only in Rosen's work did I finally see how to set aside that feeling of insufficiency that I felt from Shannon, and all those who heralded him as being ... well there is no words here.  But this was a private victory, one which cannot be repeated without paying some penalty.  (Paul looks around carefully to see who will launch an assault on my character...<smiles>, ....  maybe (I hope) no one here ).

Cell signal pathways and gene expression has very little to do with propagating bits in a wire...  since the "signal" is a continuum effect (distributed in nature and emergent in nature).  While biological signaling does require, what appears to be, bit like flips in on and off expressions, the stratification of the function of the signal and the many millions of individual bit like transformation is "double - articulated".

My current work on one of the OASIS standards uses the new term "n-articulated ontology" to capture a notion that one of many interpretations of a "signal / web service request or response" has to be orchestrated using a mix of automated (computational processes), measurements (using some interesting pattern matching), and open interactions (when necessary) with human in the loop judgments.

This orchestration may come in the form of question-answer pairing similar to how the Mark 3 is designed both during information formation and during information use.  (Is this correct, Dick?)

The modeling of the immune system using both first order differential equations and "reaction networks" was 1/2 of my 1989 dissertation.  It is clear that a stratification occurs between what MIGHT be considered "discrete" computing by the immune system, and the functional effect of a signalling process at the functional level.

I look at what I have said above and realize that I should say over and over that these are conjectures of mine...  since mainstream Information Theory does not accept a distinction between a "holonomic" and "non 'holonomic" effect as defined in Pribram's work.

I can point out that the attention to Shannon has not come at a attentional deficient since other aspects of biological expression and communication have been almost completely inaccessible (to students and to publications).  So various scholarship dies on the vine, without maturing.

Now to a second issue,

Robert Rosen once asked:

But the concept of causality is itself a complicated one; this fact has been largely overlooked in modern scientific discourse, to its cost. That causality is complicated was already pointed out by Aristotle. To Aristotle, all science was animated by a specific interrogative: Why?

The Zackman Framework used the six Greek interrogatives  { who what, where, when, why, how } to develop a "framework" for knowledge management.  This is used extensively...

In the attached PowerPoint I, starting on slide 7, break apart the Zachman and reuse part of it to produce what might be a general purpose event framework.

In many ways, the Mark 3 should have this type of interrogative ..

In any case, the discussion may be allowed to move beyond into something new that can be expressed as part of new OASIS standards....

John, how do you see (now) the possibilities of a shift in thinking from what is regarded by some as non-productive to something based on Rosen like principles?
