"It seems to me that a crucial precondition to any "knowledge representation" system (speaking intellectually not financially) is an agreement on what "knowledge" *IS*. I don't mean philosophically so much as linguistically, taking account of the assault Lakoff (and others) have mounted on the idea that any classification system (my working definition of a "knowledge representation") has universal (context-free) validity.

His book, "Women, Fire and Dangerous Things" deals with the issue at length. A few years ago I summarized the issue briefly at
